This is an Interesting and compelling article on PDF for teachers using twitter It is published by Pearson Schools in the UK.

I have been using twitter specifically to follow education for several years. It is a stunning place for teachers to find unlimited resources and educational opportunities. I am surprised that more teachers don't use it both for PD and to look at ways of using with students.

These school holidays, 1000 educators from around South Africa attended the annual School net conference. (The conference is so "hot", that it was fully booked within 4 days of opening the bookings!) I could not attend this years conference physically, but decided to "check in" using twitter as Maggie Verster was running the back channel. So while the conference was taking place in Johannesburg, I was able to "follow" from my laptop in East London using my twitter account "eduboard". For those who have not used twitter or can not see the point of twitter - I mean what can you really say in 140 characters, are people who twitter just twits? I have to admit I felt the same way 3 years ago. Maggie convinced me that TWITTER had enormous value for teachers and for students and the only way to understand why, was to try. I was not convinced, but I am a life long learner and have a lot of respect for Maggie, so I gave it a bash.

Twitter is an unbelievable tool for education, and it has enormous potential for technology integration, access to free resources and networks of brilliant technology mentors. Below I have embedded the Twitter summaries all three days that the conference took place - In the summaries, you will find a steam of twitter conversations - these conversations include links to the Keynote speakers presentations, workshop presentations and video links - You will be able to access a very high standard of profound and thought provoking information of educational technology if you just take some time to go through the information below. International Statistics on Internet and Cellphone users

Just how much has technology changed in one decade, 10 years?
According to the lastest report release by the Secretary General of UN's International telecommunications:
In 2000
The planet had 500 000 cellphone users and 250 000 Internet users.

At the end of 2010
Planet Earth has 5,28 billion cellphone users up from 4,66 Billion

Up from the 2009 figures of:
4,66 Billion cellphone users and 1,86 Billion Internet users

Some questions you might like to debate with your students:
Now we know why the World seems like it's speeding up, technology makes us more productive, so that we can do even more.
We have never had access to knowledge like this before how is this expanding consciousness and making the World a smaller place.
What does all the "technology" mean to our environment is it, or will it impact on Global warming.?

Online Berlin Conference December 2010

The 16th International Conference on Technology supported Learning took place in Berlin at the beginning of December 2010.

I think following International conferences like this, is becoming more and more important for South African educators. We live in a globally competitive World.

Fundraising idea and help

There's no denying it, South Africa schools need lots of private funding to help with purchasing technology. I have been doing a bit of research into fund raising and came accross two very good resources that your school may be interested in. For example the South African Fundraising forum has some fantatsic information and a list of useful tools, (go to the website if you'd like to use some of the tools).

Another site I found interesting was an American concept for educational fundraising called "Adopt a school"

This would be a nice concept for South Africa. If you know of anything like this in South Africa, please let me know.

Great resource for high school Maths if you have a data projector or IWB

This is an excellent site for High school Maths teachers. If you have a data projector or Interactive whiteboard, you can use this site to teach loads of diffent concepts. Visual and easy to use.

Free Translation into AFRIKAANS or other International languages

Google has some amazing features and this is certainly an interesting one for education in South Africa. This is Googles "Translator" feature. There are over 50 languages, including Afrikaans. For example, if you wanted to translate a letter from English to Afrikaans, you could do this in a few seconds! Yes that's all it took for me to translate the website below. I simply typed in the web address, and clicked the translate button. It's not 100% perfect as you can see, but for anyone needing to better understand a foreign document or website, what a bonus. Perhaps student that are struggling with a language, can use this to assit understanding the work, or to check that what they have written in English or Afrikaans, makes sense when translated back. Have a look at the screen capture below:

I use my Igoogle account to do this, it's very easy and free. Here are the steps below to get an igoogle account:

You'll need a Gmail e-mail address
Just go to google.co.za and type in "gmail" and register a gmail address
Now type in Igoogle in the search bar and create an igoogle account.
In the pic below, there is an option that says "more", click the little arrow

5. Now you will find the "translate" option
6. Just follow the instructions

Snag Films Life and Times: Nelson Mandela

Snag Films is an incredible resource for education - BUT it seems that in South Africa we are unable to stream this. If any South Africans become aware that this has changed, please let me know so that I can get the message out, and we can start using this in our classrooms. Just for interest, The Life and Times of Nelson Mandela is on the site - it is a 120 min documentary. At this point in South Africa, it is not practical to download a documentary - BUT don't despair, we are getting there and this does have big potential for education in South Africa.

This is a wonderful educational resource. Many of the films have a questionnaire and are catalogued by grade.

Sketchup from Google excellent application for Technology & much more

Have you ever been on google earth and come accross 3D tours of say "ancient Rome", well this is all done using Sketchup. It has applications for almost any subject - Think of Maths, any Maths teachers got any creative ideas, please share them at the bottom of this post.

On Friday I had a chat with Henk Wagner a 3D architecht based in Richards bay. Henk has some amazing insight into "Sketchup" a google application. He has been involved with a few schools, teaching students how to use it. He said that compared to fancy CAD programs which he used to use, "Sketchup" is amazing. I had a look at his site were he explains exactly how he did a 3D model on an old building that needed to be renovated, he has done an incredible tour. I believe that there are many valuable lessons that students can gain by using this. I am definitely going to introduce it to my 14 year old and her school.

Anyone can download the FREE version and start creating 3D models right away.

Twitter for educational purposes -A tutorial

My Web2 mentor Maggie Verster introduced me to Twitter. I have to tell you I thought she was insane, and said so too. I had no interest at all in "following" someone. Just not something I would do! But she convinced me to join and "follow" her on one of the Educational conferences where she was a keynote speaker on WEB2. Well that was the turning point. Although I don't use Twitter a lot at present, there are extensive personal Learning Networks for teachers. Teachers share resources and ideas with links to different sites. Everyone shares their knowledge for FREE!

Maggie is working with a school in Gaugteng - (very progressive I might add) to set up Twitter with the students. I look forward to sharing feedback on it's success.

Mr Robb, is a Math teacher in California. I think what he has done is amazing and something that we in South Africa, really should learn from. He has taken quick video clips on over 700 Math lessons from Algebra to Calculus and added them to his YouTube account which is shared with his own and students from all over the World. These are now available in Mobile format to watch on your Cell phone. The cellphone Mobi versions use much less data, and yes you can see them on your cellphone. Over 250 000 downloads of these Videos - THAT'S MATHS!! and I have to say I have never read so many complementary messages from students under his comments section! Worth a look for sure!

Video Conferencing and screen sharing

I have just checked this application out. It was really easy to download the Non commercial application. From there once my partner had also logged in with the passwords and keys that I gave him, we were able to access each others computers, one at a time, display each other on video (Just like skype) and also chat or simply text. This has interesting applications for remote teaching. Imagine several students in different locations attending one class.

If you are a teacher or a student been able to print any document or image to a PDF format is extreemly useful. I have recently started using Cute PDF. It is a free download and very easy to use. So far the experience has been excellent. There are aslo some editing features, which I have not needed to use. I find PDF printing essential.

FREE South African Carbon Footprint Calculator

www.trees.co.za provides anyone and everyone with the opportunity to calculate their Carbon Footprint.
Simply go to their site and copy the calculator code, and then add it to your classroom blog or ning site. Why not do some interesting tasks around this?
Get each student to calculate their families footprint and then work out what the combined footprint of the class is?
How many trees would your class have to plant to naturalise the combined footprint?
Compare different classes footprint and set a target or competition to see which class can reduce their footprint the most in 6 months.

An interesting thought, which you can raise with your students in South Africa - This presentation takes the whole global community into account with the statistics, what are our statistics in South Africa, relevant to the Global ones. One of real importance is the statistic on 15 to 35 year old effected with HIV. Fan Fiction is a very interesting online publishing house. Many teenagers are using this to write and publish stories and comment and review others stories. While I was unable to find the rules on useage protocol, I did see that the forum is moderated for teenagers for suitable content. Just browsing arround I did not come accross any unsuitable language or content.
While you may not want to use this as a classroom tool, you may have students that would love to publish thier stories.

Social networking is a trend that will continue to grow and increase in the decades ahead. How important is social networking within the education context? I know that it is contentious for many. My personal view.....I think we have a responsibility to guide and mentor our youth on using these platforms constructively. It's interesting that Scientists are setting up a social network so that they can find each other and share information more easily. If you ar looking at using a social network for your class, I recommend www.ning.com rather than Facebook. Keep Facebook as the students personal domain. This is such a great resource for Grade 3 plus Learners. They have tons of Science, Maths and reading options. You can do them in class on and IWN AND bonus, you can embed them in the classroom blog, so that kids can go home and test the cool new exersise out. BBC has made it incredibily easy to embedd, you simply go to thier site, brouse arround, select the activity you like. Copy the embedded code and then open your blog, create a post and paste the embedded code into the post - publish and you have an activity in your blog, just like the Mico organisims, life cycles and angles games below:

The great thing about this resource for us in SA, it's a small file and doesn't take forever to download.

SciFest Africa - Details 2010

Having attended the Science festival in Grahamstown South Africa for the past 5 years, with various groups of children, I have found it to be an amazing learning experience for all. My own children look forward to it every year. The festival caters for all ages from 2 to 100 years old, there is simply something interesting and intriguing for everyone.

Last year, I took a small group of children to the festival. (Aged 7 to 12). We did one leasons in how to build a Blogsite before the Festival. The blog is www.scifestafrica.blogspot.com We also setup a Twitter account called "knowledgeseek".

At the festival the children took photographs and notes of all the workshops and exhibitions attended. (The twittering did not get off the ground - being Country Kids, using cellphones wasn't big on there tools list.) The children took photographs and notes of the workshops and exhibits they experienced. After the festival we spent several afternoons doing "animoto" presentations and posts for the blog.

For 2010, we'd like to expand the blog to include more students. If you are teaching in SA and would like to get your students involved, whether they attend the Festival or not, please add a comment at the bottom of this post and join as a follower of this Blog and I will correspond with you on how we can do this. (You need a g-mail address to do this, just go to google.com and sign up for a free g-mail account, then come back to this blog and find the tab on the right hand side that says "follow".)

Google Docs is a truly must use resource for all of us. I would rate it as one of the top 21st Century tools to get your students using.
1) It FREE
2) Google docs has a Word, "publisher", excel
3) All students with a gmail account (free) can now create any document - then share it with others (There are a few ways of doing this)
4)Below shows an embeded powerpoint presentation created in google docs. (Students can embed there presentations into the classroom blog!)

5) Students can use the "share" option to collaborate on a document with a selected group.

I would rate "google" as a must have 21st Century tool for every student.

Why we need to Look at Intergrating Social media into Teaching

This is a very good and interesting presentation from a 23 year old college grad. Charlie Hoehn. What is interesting is how he had to really think out of the box and use WEB2 and the Internet to get work. Not just any work. Just 8 months after embarking on his "out of the Box" he has elivated himself into a position where he has so many offers for top employment that he can make hiom own choice.
What is important here for teachers to understand is the importance of "Social media" skills in everyday education - These are skills that must be Incorporated into the learning environment.
